    Peter Vaughan 1923-2016

    Peter Vaughan 1923-2016

    RIP

Well-known for playing the part of Grouty in Porridge but for me memorable for his roles in Our Mutual Friend and in M R James' A Warning to the Curious.

Just read this news too - other than "Genial Harry Grout" in Porridge and "Maester Aemon" in Game of Thrones (which I suspect will receive the widest coverage), like you PJPJ, I also thought immediately of that MR James ghost story and above all, his chilling "Tulkinghorn" in that 1985 Bleak House adaptation

Many hours of enjoyment and creeping flesh from this wonderful actor
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

... and in Citizen Smith, Our Friends in the North (the disintegration of a strong personality after he goes to confront the neighbour with the German Shepherds - astonishingly, chillingly moving), and Anthony Hopkins' father (with the handkerchief problem) in The Remains of the Day.

Oh yes, I'd forgotten his wonderful role as Hopkins' father. A superb piece.

Great character actor over many decades. I can't think of anyone who did quietly menacing more effectively.

One of the finest character actors in the last fifty years.

I don't think much of the BBC obit btw: best known for Thrones .

I'll always remember him for his remorseless Tulkinghorn, the vengeful Aussie in the |Boscombe Valley Mystery and various assorted underworld gangsters at which he was sans pareil.

Very annoyed that the obituaries of this phenomenal actor focus on two bits of fluff (Porridge and GOT) and neglect his incredible stage work (he created the role of Ed in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane) and his stunning performance in Our Friends In The North (for which he 'nearly' won a BAFTA).

Peter Vaughan's real name was Peter Ohm and his father was the branch manager of the local Lloyds Bank here and young Peter attended the grammar school in the town. My late father remembered Peter well from those early years and would tell us stories whenever he appeared on TV.
