Europe at its best: The new Shakespearean Theatre at Hardelot, Pas de Calais

I spent the weekend with friends who live in Condette, 25 minutes' drive south once you emerge from the Eurotunnel. In the grounds of the Château d'Hardelot in Condette has been built this magnificent 'Wooden O':

Worth Forumites adding it to their list of places to visit - especially, perhaps, the Early Music crowd, if the Summer Season is anything to go by:

1 July: Purcell, King Arthur - Vox Luminis, Lionel Meunier

2 July: Tribute to Shakespeare - Les Talens Lyriques, Christophe Rousset

I can't go to those, sadly - but am going to be keeping a careful eye on the subsequent seasons....

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The acoustics must be tremendous - all that wood....a plucker's delight, I'd guess

Yes..... If this chap did a recital there, I'd buy my overnight £60 return like a shot:

(Did you hear it on Record Review on 18th June? Gorgeous. Just bought the CD).

Yes, and I might buy the CD. He hadn't crossed my radar before - I see he turns out for Le Concert des Nations with J Savall, he's playing theorbo on their Charpentier CDs. These two clips suggest he is not a stranger to flamenco - posture (first clip), and (in the second piece, the Santiago de Murcia Tarantella especially) technique. You might have guessed he is a Hopkinson Smith pupil (with whom he studied in Basel), he brings the same sort of excitement to this repertoire .

I have CDs of our own William Carter playing Corbetta and Santiago de Murcia which are, dare I say it, a tiny bit dull by comparison.
