Somewhat odd film on Channel 4 tonight.
Lindsay Duncan and Jim Broadbent directed by Roger Michell.

Not really too sure what to make of it, though I suppose it at least didn't have the directness of most US films which leave little to the imagination. Seemed to be a kind of "anti-success" fest, possibly fitting in with the supposed left wing anarchist tendencies of Jim B's character.

Given that possibly more people don't "succeed" in a conventional way nor get awards for surviving in what in some areas is an increasingly hostile environment - and I don't mean Syria - but rather those parts of life in the UK which are somewhat dysfunctional - education, social services etc., then the film could resonate with some.

One of a handful of films recently aimed perhaps at an older and growing demographic - more exotically, Quartet and Best Exotic etc....but addressing the life issues of older people and thus to be welcomed. Likewise I'm not sure how successful this was - I'd seen it before and wasn't in the mood for a second viewing.

When my mother died I said to my uncle that I was sorry that she'd had what seemed a somewhat boring life, and hadn't really done very much. She was a bit extreme and insular, and claimed each year not to want to do things, though ultimately perhaps slightly regretted the missed opportunities. My uncle's response was that he thought most people ultimately achieved very little in life, and it was much more normal, and that we shouldn't really worry too much about it.
