Room for some interesting discussion about medium and message here Stanley - I thought last night's way too self-indulgent and presenter-centered (a tendency which began in the middle episode, after an excellent start, where SK's musical skills were deployed to a useful end) - but such is the way of things these days . For me, all the "business" in part 3 got in the way of the story, or plot, which I'd largely lost by the end.

Thank you, Richard, but I prefer to by-pass if I may. As a mid-octogenarian I am fortunate to have a few long-standing friends of more than 50 years and we've developed a shorthand over the decades. Discussion on these boards requires a special skill to avoid downright unpleasantness or a tendency to pursue a carefully analysed fart - for some,life viewed as an opportunity to allocate marks out of ten. I agree that the third of the series was very disappointing - If it was about revolution and romance surely it should have addressed as the first two episodes did the music properly . There were considerable changes in performing practice and instruments between 1800-1880 as well as in the last 2 decades . The last episode fell between two stools and the rushed 90 seconds consideration of Mahler was embarrassing . A shame perhaps the original proposal was for a longer series .
