    Geldof on Yeats

Interesting programme last night on BBC4

Very opinionated of course as one would expect from Geldof and some might groan at the use of rather too many of Bob's chums giving readings but I found it to be an enjoyable and intelligent way to spend a Sunday evening and a pleasant surprise was the 100 minute length which gave it time to stretch out and do justice to the subject.

A co-production with RTE, I am not sure if it has already been broadcast in Ireland or when it will be if not.

I thought it was a great pity that Roy Foster wasn't given the chance to write and present this programme - far more knowledgeable than Geldof about the background and the work, and author of a superb biography of Yeats. A real opportunity missed in plumping for celebrities rather than experts.

That's the BBC of today, isn't it? Choose a celebrity rather than an expert. Entertain rather than educate.

          Hello there,

I have a lot of time for Roy Foster... He did a History of Ireland a few years ago that was witty, cogent and fair imho...

          Best Wishes,

          Tevot

To be fair, Roy Foster was featured quite a lot and was not afraid to contradict Geldof either. Geldof himself came across as passionate about Yeats and I could overlook a couple of wince making moments, such as comparing Synge and Lady Gregory at the Abbey Theatre to punk rock ! I would still encourage anyone who is interested and did not see it to give it a go.

Crikey Charlie. I wonder who Geldolf would compare Paidric Pearse to - Sid Vicious !!? ?

The Easter Rising perhaps was a Sex Pistols Gig !!?!?

              Best Wishes,

              Tevot

Love Yeats but can't stand Geldof, so I didn't watch.
