I have just seen the winners of this will be announced tonight. If you click on the link you can see the nominees, I was a little surprised to see Howard Skempton listed. I post to see if anyone has thoughts on these Awards and what, if any, weight they carry.

Gosh! Sony Radio Awards yesterday, RPS Awards today. The excitement is almost unbearable ...
Any thoughts? Well, they do seem a bit 'worthy'. Like the BBC Phil's new radio Festival of Salford, including the orchestra teaming up with dubstep stars Nero in a Dubstep Symphony, 'to celebrate classical [sic] music across seven BBC national radio networks', it all seems like a rather tired effort to drum up a bit of enthusiasm. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I am not sure if the Otello production by Graham Vick with the Birmingham Opera Company (shown on BBC2 some while back) fell within the period for these awards but if so I am surprised it was not one of the nominees. I thought it was really ambitious and inspiring, and I'm not a great Verdi enthusiast.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The list of winners is here:
I was particularly cheered to note this:
"The RPS Instrumentalist award goes to Leon Fleisher. He has been an outstanding musician since his debut performance at 8. He faced a neurological condition at 36 that led him to embrace conducting, teaching and commissioning music for the left hand, and, regaining the use of the right hand after four decades, his extraordinary performances at Aldeburgh in 2010 proved beyond doubt that he has re-emerged as one of the greatest pianists of his generation."
