JD Salinger, Made in England - R4 18th Feb

'For Esme - with Love and Squalor' may well be my favourite short story. Today it and Salinger's association with wartime Tiverton in Devon was celebrated on Radio 4 by Salinger biographers, Sarah Graham and Mark Hodkinson. Indeed Graham described it as the greatest short story of the 20th century. I'm not sure that I would want to listen to the programme without having read the story - they gave a wee bit too much away if you were thinking about reading it; but if you have read 'For Esme' you may find it, as I did, quite fascinating. Made me fancy a visit there.

Many thanks for the tip JC. I am very keen on Salinger - and "For Esme - with Love and Squalour".

There is, I think, unpublished material but I don't know how much of it will ever see the light of day.

I read it a while back: enjoyed it but I don't remember all the details. I've always loved the title.

Best short story of the 20th century? The Diamond As Big As The Ritz by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Or, perhaps, The Blue Dress by William Trevor.

Fitzgerald was a great short story writer indeed, Conchis. I never have seen the film but read 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' in a collection of FSF short stories when I was at school and was haunted by it for years after but could never find it again - then the film came out and I realised it wasn't a dream; but maybe it wasn't as short as I thought.

Alan Sillitoe's "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" and Ray Bradbury's haunting "All Summer in a Day" deserve a mention too.
