    Deutschland 83 - Channel 4 / The Same Sky - Netflix

I switched over to Channel 4+1 and watched Deutschland 83 - so that's my Winter Sunday nights viewing sorted.

      Deutschland83 - Channel 4

Having watched Episode 1 (broadcast Sunday evening) I too am totally hooked.

The premise is pretty basic, ditto the tension-delivering scenes - but the setting, the style, the acting, combine into a moreish mixture

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

        Hiya Caliban,

I thought Deutschland 83 was gripping, wonderful entertainment. If you enjoy 'Deutschland 83' then you will love the 2006 film 'The Lives of Others'.

... by which I meant "Spin" starting Friday 9pm on the more4 channel, a "tense political thriller" in French.

edit - having looked at caliban's link I'm obviously behind the times with 'Walter presents' - there have been several series evidently.

Walter under the bridge then. Thanks Volken for the thumbs-up on Deutchland 83, which I wouldn't have spotted otherwise.

What's strange is that before watching Deutschland 83 I really had no knowledge of the background and the Cold War at that date - although I know I probably should - and it's quite shocking reading about the Pershings, Abel Archer, etc., and the fact that nuclear weapons could have been fired. I don't know about Spin, I did read the synopsis and it doesn't seem to have had very good reviews. (I think that's to be on MoreFour)

... we're finding Deutschland 83 pretty thin so far, and a bit clunky, without the depth and darkness we've got used to with various scandiwegian offerings : but look forward to episode 2 to see if it increases in interest.

Much more looking forward to Spin...

War & Peace recorded, hope to have a chance to watch in the next few days....

I enjoyed the first episode, but we do have to make a few assumptions, don't we ? The main one is that our young protagonist has exactly three weeks training as a spy, but in that short space of time he becomes fully trained. I think we can assume at the beginning he knows very little of the way of life in the West, although we are told that he learns the term for a supermarket, yet he seems completely at home with such details as knowing cigarette brands or the price of coffee. Surely all this necessary background knowledge would have needed rather more time to acquire?

OK, it's a quibble, but it does make the story less believable.

Did anyone watch this. (I must admit two hours viewing on a commercial channel with ad breaks seemingly every 10 minutes I was losing the will to live .... and I thought how awful any of the Scandiwegian dramas would be if they were so constantly interrupted)

Thankfully the latter episodes are only an hour long. I wasn't particularly gripped, was anyone else?

I continue to enjoy Deutschland 83. Yes, I could find lots of holes in the production but I found it suitably tense and even thrilling at times. The character Martin Rauch as Moritz Stamm must be a bag of nerves. I almost jumped out of my seat when that woman Chinese (?) agent attached Stamm. I agree the commercial breaks are a pain in the **** so I watch later on the SkyPlus option.
