Deutschland 83 - Channel 4 / The Same Sky - Netflix
When we are out of Spoiler territory (richardfinegold - please do shout when you and mrs finegold have finished the series!!) - what do we think of the off-screen gunshot in the final episode....?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

.... well, only that the general had just shot himself, having narrowly avoided starting World War III ? [edit - just read that Guardian article which suggests doubt on this]
I think my main pleasure from this series was seeing our young 'hero' getting himself out of some tight spots - but it was all rather far-fetched wasn't it [or perhaps not] ?

We won't know until Series II But when I watched I thought it was the Younger. (Also, I think the baby's father is Thomas, not Martin)
I'm not sure I can agree with mercia that it was far fetched, the writers had firsthand knowledge of the situation at the time didn't they? Anyway, I greatly enjoyed it, would like some more drama set East-West cold war - although of course I've now started to watch Trapped!
I have not yet read the thread, in case there are spoilers
Wise!!

Bought the set on DVD, and we are up to the finale. I have watched every episode about 3 times each because my wife always wants to replay episodes because she is fascinated by the show but has a hard time keeping the characters straight. She had confused the East German Professor (Tishbier) with the Stasi Major General and now has to try and sort things out.
I think it is a great show but as the episodes got deeper there are just to many holes in the plot, such as Alex Edel being allowed to return to work as if nothing happened after the attempted abduction ofthe American General, or Martin being able to cruise throught the DDR Consulate in Bonn on the way to donating a kidney without being photographed while Edel is photographed extensively a few minutes later in the same place. Oh well, it's only television...

As you say, it's only television, and it happens all the time in films. Even Raymond Chandler didn't know who killed the chauffeur in The Big Sleep, and he wrote it! ( Or was that The Maltese Falcon ? )
Ok, we are done, 3 months after Cali implored us to finish. Who fired the shot? What happens to Thomas after he crosses to the west--does Tischbier off him? Why do the East Germans just release Martin? What happens to Yvonne? Does Alex have AIDS, if he is still alive?

Does this mean you found the series unsatisfying, Richard; or that you are merely awaiting the second season with breathless anticipation? (I don't know if there is to be S02, anyone know? Hope so!)

... this Guardian blog, with its 400 comments attached, may answer some of your questions -

We enjoyed it and would watch a sequel. I have now seen every episode except the finale at least twice as I rewatched them with my wife, and the holes in the logic become more glaring, but I still found it absorbing
A very similar series to Deutschland 83, if not better, is 'The Same Sky' on Netflix. An East German "Romeo" agent on assignment to seduce women on the other side of the Berlin Wall who work for Western Gov agencies. 'The Same Sky' is rather more adult in its themes too. Highly recommended!
