A rare outing for opera on BBC 4 when David McVicar's much praised Andrea Chenier production, conducted by Antonio Pappano, recorded earlier this year, will be shown at 1930hrs on Friday, 18 December. Jonas Kaufmann garnered an Olivier nomination in the title role - can't believe it was the late 70s when I heard Placido Domingo, also at Covent Garden,in fine fettle singing the title role as the eponymous poet/ journalist sent to the guillotine in 1794.
A fine cast also includes Eva-Maria Westbroek (Maddalena de Coigny), Zeljko Lucic (Carlo Gerard), Denyce Graves (Bersi) and how pleasing to see the name of Rosalind Plowright (Contessa de Coigny).
Already in my diary for recording to hard drive with the added attraction of subtitles.
