A great character, an unforgettable voice. I quite admire someone who dares to be scathing. It's also fascinating that he was apprently the son of Philip Heseltine/Peter Warlock.

It's what he would have wanted.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I liked him: a great voice and an endearingly pedantic manner.

Significantly, a lot of stupid people seemed to hate him.

He genuinely didn't seem to give a toss how he was perceived by others: that was probably his great strength.

              I echo that!

              Not much to add except

That's even more astonishing than Alina Ibragimova marrying Le Service!

Always a joy to listen to and to read, and a refreshing antidote to prevailing artistic orthodoxies.

And I had no idea to make such a comparison!

Normal service will be resumed in first position...

Sorabji once said to me à propos that quote that, were it true, he (i.e. Sorabji himself) must have inspired an unusual amount of judging (although I cannot now recall in which cheek his tongue was at the time)...

Oh dear. I did indeed boggle at the Warlock-Sewell connection before, 3¾ years ago mind you, here

                        Better than the original?

Given Sorabji's longstanding friendship with Philip Heseltine, I fear that I can throw no light on this, as I have no idea what if anything Sorabji thought about Brian Sewell or even whether he knew that BS was PH's son; that said, KS loved PH greatly and was devastated to learn of his death in 1930...

Quite possibly (& probably) intelligent ones did as well.

I also was somewhat flabberghasted at discovering that he was Philip Heseltine's son.

I rather liked the headline in one of Sunday's papers, saying that he had the voice of a duchess. He could have been a rather good Lady Bracknell, out-doing even Edith Evans in that line

He had a few things to say about the BBC - and Radio 3
