An Inspector Calls, The Go-Between, Cider with Rosie and other BBC "autumn classics"

I like David Thewlis very much and thought he put in a powerful performance as the Inspector in what I found an extremely entertaining version of 'An Inspector Calls' on Beeb 1 last Sunday.
A mysterious inspector interrupts a wealthy family's party with shocking news.

Me too though had to stop half way through; the rest to be watched this weekend. No spoilers please!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

          The butler did it.

I was just about to post the exact message when I scrolled down and there it was!

Instead, I shall merely comment on Anton's response to john

I agree; I thought it was excellent.

I spent ten years marking GSCE English Literature papers, and must have read over five hundred essays by 16 year-olds on this play. I think it says something about the quality of the play that it still remains a fresh and powerful experience.

film and television versions allow for flashbacks which I assume are not in the original play, but I may be wrong about that

Excellent which is more than can be said of the Lady's Chatterley's Lover of the week before .

Yes - Eva Smith (etc) doesn't appear in the original, but (as with the excellent Alistair Simm film) she is a "real" individual - which rather weakens the possibility that ... oh, I'll wait for Cali to see the butler being denounced.

Extra dialogue added too - the opening "Do you believe in God?" isn't in the original.

Or next week's The Go Between, by the looks of it.

Nothing can possibly better the 1971 original with Christie and Bates, one of the best things Pinter ever did in capturing the past as a different country, imo, so why on earth all the wasted money and effort of a remake?

Oh, LOR', yes - that was abysmal!

(I have higher hopes for The Go-Between this coming Sunday.)

Julie Christie - what a delight she was!

I saw the trailer for it, which had the effect of sending me back to the film, which I watched this afternoon: I know of no better adaptation of a novel for the cinema.

How can any other version compare with Pinter, Losey, Alan Bates, Julie Christie and Margaret Leighton? The new version looked awful.
