One of the greatest actors /actresses has died at the age of 89 . With Glenda Jackson also recently gone leaves Dame Judi still with us . I saw her once in an Edward Albee play - she had extraordinary magnetism on the stage.
RIP Maggie Smith

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We didn't get around to seeing Maggie Smith on stage until 2019 in what turned out to be her remarkable last appearance. In A German Life by Christopher Hampton at the Bridge Theatre she plays Brunhilde Pomsel, a secretary in Goebbels' propaganda ministry, who had died only two years previously, aged 105. She is alone on stage without an interval for the whole performance.
I think my first encounter with her work was in the mid 60s the filmed version of Othello with Laurence Olivier and Frank Finlay - in a local cinema with intermission.
