    RIP Maggie Smith

One of the greatest actors /actresses has died at the age of 89 . With Glenda Jackson also recently gone leaves Dame Judi still with us . I saw her once in an Edward Albee play - she had extraordinary magnetism on the stage.

I saw her years ago in Ionesco's Rhinoceros with Laurence Olivier. Couldn't remember whether I saw it at the Royal Court or the Strand, but it must have been the Strand (same year, 1960) as that was when Maggie Smith took over from Joan Plowright. I'm trying to recall exactly one of Daisy's classic Miss Brodie lines, but will have to chase up the ref.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

      Guardian article (hopefully shareable) here:

In a career that began in the 1950s, her roles ranged from Desdemona to Miss Jean Brodie, Virginia Woolf and Minerva McGonagall

Independent article (similarly hopefully shareable) here:

Did anyone see her on stage in Lettice and Lovage with Margaret Tyzack? A wonderful evening.

Times obituary here, I hope shareable:

Oscar-winner as Miss Jean Brodie who enjoyed a rich cinema and TV career, as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and in Downton Abbey, but whose true home was the theatre

We didn't get around to seeing Maggie Smith on stage until 2019 in what turned out to be her remarkable last appearance. In A German Life by Christopher Hampton at the Bridge Theatre she plays Brunhilde Pomsel, a secretary in Goebbels' propaganda ministry, who had died only two years previously, aged 105. She is alone on stage without an interval for the whole performance.

I think my first encounter with her work was in the mid 60s the filmed version of Othello with Laurence Olivier and Frank Finlay - in a local cinema with intermission.

She was a real hero with my kids (and me), bringing Professor Minerva McGonnagal to life in the Harry Potter films. I can watch her in 'The Lady in the Van' any time it comes on the box. Wonderful actor.
