A great actor gone is my instant reaction.
For me it won't be his roles in Titanic or Lord of the Rings, but "Gissa job", and his readings from religious sceptics through history in Jonathan Miller's short TV series on the History of Atheism. Bernard Hill truly occupied these parts - and there will be many others I can't right now remember but will the moment I dig them out. Oh yes - in "Ghandi". He's a hero for me inasmuch as he really put his all into characters who I, and I believe he, really believed in - a sort of elder brother I never had. How many sceptics of other kinds will have been convinced by his presence and conviction?
R.I.P. Bernard Hill, and condolences to his nearest and dearest.
