Following on from the four 2013 Early Music Show programmes in the "Sound of Cinema" season, it's fascinating to look at the listings for the nearby programmes & compare them to today's offerings.
For example, Martin Handley's 14/9/2013 "Saturday - Martin Handley: Sound of Cinema" lists:
Bach, Bernstein, Bliss, Britten, Wagner, Michael Kamen (Band of Brothers), Debussy, Fauré, Grieg, Handel, Holst, Mendelssohn, Verdi & Virginia Sacred Harp Singers (Amazing Grace)
Then, later in the day, we had "Sound of Cinema: Christopher Lee" with:
Adam, Beethoven, James Bernard (The Devil Rides Out), Puccini, Magnet & Paul Giovanni (The Wicker Man), Sousa, Leoncavallo, more Wicker Man, Wagner, Offenbach, Sibelius, Verdi, Rachmaninov, Rossini, Tchaikovsky & Wagner
Already mentioned, The Early Music Show "Sound of Cinema: A-Z of Baroque at the Box Office"
The following day, there was a "Sound of Cinema: BBC SSO at the Movies" concert with varied cinema music including:
"John Williams: Flying Theme (from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial)
Loewe: Gigi
John Williams: Imperial March (from Star Wars)
Loewe: On the Street Where You Live (from My Fair Lady)
Alan Menken: Beauty and the Beast
John Williams: Schindler's List
Howard Shore: Lord of the Rings
Steiner: Tara's Theme (from Gone With The Wind)
Korngold: Robin Hood March
Richard M Sherman: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (from Mary Poppins)
James Horner: I See You (from Avatar)
Arnold: The Bridge On the River Kwai
Rozsa: Ben-Hur
Rodgers: The Sound of Music
John Williams: Throne Room and End Titles (from Star Wars)"
and on went the season... including Composer of the Week "Golden Age of Hollywood", "British Film Music" & "John Williams", and on and on.
A varied & interesting selection with something for everyone.
Sam J are you taking note? I suspect all these programmes are still in the BBC Archives - why not listen to them or, even better, repeat some of them?
