I see that R7, now R4extra is 'going to lose alot of childish stuff' as I read somewhere. My 70 something cousin will be disappointed. He loves Kenneth Horne and the programme you mention. I heard most of the Kenneth Horne programmes first time round,years ago

don't worry, Round the Horne won't be going anywhere
they're referring to the 'Little Toe' and 'Big Toe' programmes targetted at children which took up several hours of Radio 7's daily output

(and yet a year or two back I distinctly remember people saying there weren't enough radio programmes for children)

There's currently 1 'Round The Horne' on the Radio4 Extra iPlayer, and 6 coming up. A total of 85 have been broadcast in total, and I'm sure they'll all reappear in the schedule ere too long.

I hardly ever listened to Radio 7 (except for Round the Horne) but didn't it have programmes from Radio 4 on it anyway? Is the rationale for rebranding just to pull in more listeners or is this a radical makeover as regards content?

It's the former - no great changes. Some of the stuff goes back YEARS - Dick Barton Special Agent, The Clitheroe Kid, Journey Into Space. One new feature is an 'add-on' to The Archers - an idea pinched from a certain long-running TV programme....Another that looks interesting is 'classic' episodes of Desert Island Discs (I've just been listening to ex-President Bartlet - sorry, Martin Sheen - in the first of the new series on Radio 4.)

On Saturday 6pm on R3 you settle down to listen to Khatia Buniatishvili playing
Bach/List: Fantasy and Fugue BWV 542
and what do you get: BWV 543

On Monday at 10.46am on R3 you settle down to listen to Tamas Vasary playing
Liszt: Reminiscences of Don Juan, S148
and who do you get: Jorge Bolet.

And today is only Monday!

Sorry if this sounds petty and petulant, but these mistakes occur far too frequently. One consolation is that R3 is becoming increasingly irrelevant to my way of listening to music.

There is so much missing/ incorrect information in the Radio Times - and much of it appears on the BBC iPlayer too. One can understand changes made between publication of the RT and the broadcast (although perhaps not of CD programmes such as the Liszt b'cast this morning), but not retrospective mistakes.

What really bothers me is when I miss a rare work or performance because it hasn't been listed. I wonder how many living British composers have been unaware of a broadcast of their music till after the event (if ever), for example?

When I had a job I was instructed to undertake all the procedures legally required to get rid of an unsatisfsctory employee. Using all his entitlements he outwitted me - and I got the blame.

I find the RT increasingly muddled.

For instance -Big Heading R3 LIVE lunchtime Concert [today]

2 items,then sub-heading Afternoon on 3, British Symphonies.

Stanford Irish symphony [no 3]

THEN straight on with Wesley, Liszt,Bartok amd [bsck to British] RVW.

I [reluctantly] had to compile adverts for all the music mags when at Augener. My boss, quite rightly, was very picky about the occasional b...s up and wouldn't have passed a mess like today's and every page in RT

For people with bad sight it's very hard to follow.

It doesn't help that "British Symphonies" and the five composers down the list are all in the same bold font and size, while the titles are it italics, with the whole Afternoon on 3 item in one tight block.

Out of interest in Parry being COTW, the details further up on the same are even more difficult to distinguish. I'm wondering if it really is necessary to have all musicians performing two movements from the Nonet in B flat listed, when every chorister singing The Poet's Song isn't. Oh, sorry, thar refers to "Crossing the Bar"... presumably.

It's one jumble, and has been ever since they reformatted RT. Like everything else, we're expected to get used to changes of this sort.

I find it all perfectly clear.

There isn't enough space devoted to radio: 2 pages per day for all radio listings, with more and more stations being sneaked in. Meanwhile pages are wasted in duplicating the perceived highlights of television, and endless references to Alison Graham's obnoxious column.

It isn't just Radio 3 listings that suffer. The Light Programme used to have a whole page, but Radio 2 now has 60% of a single column. The Home Service also had a page to itself, but now has three truncated columns.
