I added to my post - but deleted, out of respect and discretion:

"I can almost hear the approaching tap-tap-tap of vinpétillant's be-ribboned cane and the faint 'whooosh' of his lorgnette being applied in horror to his face"

By the way, vinmousseux - have you seen Intouchables? If so what did you think? And if not, are you going to give it a chance later? (I really think you should see it!)

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I side with Mr.V. The end of the film has a Proustian reference, but I have a suspicion that the implication was "I wouldn't for one moment suggest that you are so ill-read as to not understand* this, but if your neighbours in the cinema barely supress a murmur and you don't know why, then you are". I caught it, and felt smug, but on mentioning it to Mme afterward received a pitying glance, as being not** worth mentioning.

        * I rewrote the word order (to not/not to) three times, and I'm still unsure.
        ** ditto (not being/being not)

p.s., its only a movie, Ingrid.

To summarise: if you haven't seen it yet, just bloody watch it !!!!!

Thanks for the advance notice on this film.

I think either "to not" or "not to" will do. If not, I'm sure someone will put us right on the Pedant's board!

I suspect there may be a high degree of "forumite crossover" between that board and this one.

No need to watch it! Have just caught up with Quelle Catastrophe! France with Robert Peston. Probably more Intouchables in there than in the film.
