    The Closer

While not wanting to impinge on the reverence and intoxication of the "Spiral" thread which I totally share and since the scenario of female detective and not-always-reliable team was mentioned and all the characters carrying baggage of some sort, I venture to suggest:

    The Closer (2005–2012)
    TV Series - 46 min - Crime | Drama | Mystery
    Ratings: 7.5/10 from 16,649 users
    Reviews: 87 user | 22 critic
Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson runs the Priority Homicide Division of the LAPD with an unorthodox style. Her innate ability to read people and obtain confessions helps her and her team solve the city's toughest, most sensitive cases.

which is only slightly less well liked than:
    Spiral (2005– )
    "Engrenages" (original title)
    TV Series - 52 min - Crime | Drama | Mystery
    Ratings: 8.5/10 from 2,350 users
    Reviews: 29 user | 3 critic
Follows criminal investigations in Paris from all the different points of view of a criminal investigation.

    on the imdb.

The Closer followed an earlier series of "The Good Wife" now delightfully back again, in the same time slot and after a while it became regular watching.

    Hello there Clive,

Thanks for the links. I have seen a few episodes of The Closer on Satellite TV. To be honest it didn't make much of an impression and I'm not sure that I warm to Kyra Sedgwick. Given the positive reviews elsewhere I will time permitting give it another go...

    Best Wishes,

    Tevot

She's certainly not a particularly easy person/character to like.

I knew I'd seen J.K. Simmons before, he plays Brenda's immediate boss in the LAPD.
