We got Sky in the first place because we had an extremely poor terrestrial signal in our location, it was that or nothing (before there was such a thing as Freeview or Freesat). I paid a bit extra to start with (2000 or so) to receive Jeremy Isaacs' Arts Channel. That folded, but in due course Sky set up....two Arts channels.

Isaacs' Artsworld channel was the reason behind my first subscription to Sky. In those days the channel cost £6 permonth, on top of the basic Sky subscription (at that time there was a bargain rate with very limited channels). Eventually Artsworld was taken over by Sky and expanded to two channels - and the extra fee was abolished, with the Arts channels being included in most Sky bundles of channels. A bargain by any standards.

I have always found the strong feeling against Sky on this forum difficult to understand (PLEASE don't repeat the arguments for me) and in complete variance with the public at large, who accept Sky without complaint - indeed with deep gratitude.

The range of channels is unrivalled and includes the two Arts Channels, Sky Atlantic and most of the channels available elsewhere - all through an efficient and reliable broadcasting system. It's time for us all to accept that Sky is central to television (and radio) in the UK and beyond.

So much of what we buy or consume has " issues". IMO, though I really don't like supporting Murdoch, SKY is just one more thing that I can't really approve of, but end up buying sometimes.
actually, that applies to the BBC too. ( which you HAVE to pay for in addition to a SKY subscription, in order to watch SKY or other pay TV).

If you are canny you can get SKY for well under the published prices, which helps the conscience just a tad. As I said above I have never paid more than half price, although there have been spells where I didn't get a discounted deal and just live without it
