    RIP Richard Pasco

I was sorry to read of the death last month of Richard Pasco, a very fine classical actor with an excellent voice for radio drama. I remember seeing him as Richard II in the RSC production in 1974 during a run in which he and Ian Richardson alternated the roles of Richard and Bolingbroke - I was glad I saw Pasco in the king's role as I felt he was slightly better suited to that than Richardson. I think Pasco was not so well known here because he was a stage performer much more than a screen one. Grauniad obituary here:

Classical actor with a prolific repertoire, authoritative stage presence and unforgettable voice

Here is a record of his stage and TV/film appearances (shame it does not list his radio drama performances):

I wonder if the 1955 tour of Hamlet to the Soviet Union mentioned in that list was the same as the one described in Alan Bennett's An Englishman Abroad, with Coral Browne as Gertrude.

He also spent a few years with the Bristol Old Vic company where I saw him several times (with Barbara Leigh-Hunt), including Hamlet. He did have an outstandingly fine voice.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

He appeared in radio productions as Edward Elgar, and both he and his wife recorded selections from them for CD (Meridian? - Wood Magic?). I have them here so I'll look them out.

A truly distinguished actor and it was always a pleasure to see his name in any cast list. I always thought of him as being in the same league as Robert Eddison, an older actor, both gifted with stage presence and clarity in their work. RIP Richard Pasco.
