German Expressionism at the Leicester Museum & Gallery

we have just spent a delightful day in Leicester mostly at the Museum ... a stunningly displayed collection of German Expressioism and Picasso Ceramics plus a decent coffee bar

on alternate Thursdays there are lunchtime concerts; classical accordion on the 16th, Trio Isimsiz 30th and Giovanni Solima cello and Kathryn Stott piano on 15th November

a 10 minute walk from the station and worth it for the Red Woman or Pablo's plates alone ...
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

I worked in Leicester for some years during the late 1970s. I have no pleasant memories of the place, but I did like the museum and art gallery, in a charming tree-lined Georgian avenue.
I also recall, fondly, the Thursday lunchtime concerts; I had to rush to get there in time, and back afterwards, so indigestion usually followed. Eating during the performances was discouraged, but the tinkle of kicked-over coffee cups, spoons and plates punctuated the music. I think if I try I could conjure the particular odour of over-boiled coffee, Shippam's paste sandwiches (probably mine) and damp woollen overcoats drying over a hot radiator. I am glad to learn that the concerts continue. Thank you Calum for that Proustian moment.

Schoenberg, Berg and co recordings should be made available through headphones as an accompanying option mentioned in the handbook, to draw parallels between the musical and visual worlds of Expressionism.

had an interesting conversation on that very subject with a member of staff S_A

yes Alain many Brit cities in the 70s were pretty awful; my own experiences in Liverpool scarred me for life!
however Leicester has change and the New Walk area is now altogether charming .... the catering world you so elegantly capture is long gone of course, and the facility is now operated by Cafe Costa [as distinctive in its way as UK 70s catering]

the art is ravishing and startling ... the two rooms of expressionism and ceramics are little treasures of the planet ...

Cafe Costa: Another Proustian recollection. Costa always meant that strong smell of roasting beans around Waterloo and the RFH. Returning from one of my periodic changes of domicile I was amazed to find a chain of Costa coffee shops had sprung up in the UK. Similar sea-changes have happened so often they fuel my sense of disengagement. I always seem to be in the wrong country at the wrong time.

I digress ("it's my only weakness you know"). Calum - is that exhibition permament, and is it vaux le voyage? I have other reasons to visit Leicestershire at some point, and could fit it into the schedule if worth it.
