What about Robert Altman's "Nashville"? Only one person has nominated this film so far.
Actually the Altman film that I loved most from the 70s was 'Three Women' with Sissy Spacek. I haven't seen it in years but when it came out it haunted me...wonder how it would stand up now.

I've just checked and Altman's 'Brewster McCloud' came out in 1970 (as did MASH), had Sally Kellerman in it (as did MASH), and I loved it too. Apart from 'Harold and Maude' I only saw Bud Cort in one or two other films - wonder why...

I took a cassette recorder hidden in a paper bag on my third visit to the cinema with a 120-minut tape. The result was hardly audible but how I treasured it!
The Cabaret soundtrack LP was my first-ever retirement present, aged about 19 After working in a WHS record department for many weeks of a uni vacation and playing it rather a lot, my colleagues took the hint when I left!

One 70s film that I saw on first release and didn't really know what to make of, Sergio Leone's My Name is Nobody. Bought it on DVD recently and enjoyed it greatly in a thoroughly low-brow way. Has anyone else sunk this low?
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

How could I forget Mel Brookes?!

            Young Frankenstein.

            Silent Movie.

            Here's a small anecdote...

A few years ago (5, to be precise), I worked with a film composer who had worked with the great man. 'What was he like to work with' I asked, breathlessly. 'Some days, the best person I ever worked with. Other days, a monumental pain in the ass!' he replied.

... the above.... plus Woody's 'Love and Death' & 'Sleeper'

and Nic Roeg's 'Don't Look Now'... must have watched that 10 times - now there's a scary fillum!! ('The Shining' just scrapes into the 1980's, talking of scary films)

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

in 1972 the daughter of a local clergyman decided to organise a farewell do (dinner and film) for leavers from the local boys' grammar school and girls' high school in Winchester. That was the one she picked in cheerful ignorance of its content. She admitted afterwards that her least favourite films were horror and those with sex scenes. Well, the rest of us enjoyed it!

Come to think of it - most of my favourite films are not from the 70s.

I remember being impressed with a creepy number based on a Robert Graves short story: The Shout, with Alan Bates and John Hurt... In fact I have it on DVD

... reminded me of another favourite Bertolucci, which I saw again recently on the box, the very stylish "Il Conformista", including the beautiful Dominique Sanda. 1970, so just creeps in.
