I've just spotted this thread. I'm going to enjoy reading this.

I've no wish to 'poach' R4 people (especially if they don't have any interest in the arts/speech side of R3's output). The offer was there - on the model of when the announcement was made about the R3 boards - in case people didn't want to lose touch. We'd love to hear from those who listen to Do3, of course, or who perhaps want to discuss wider arts/cultural issues. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Confused as always. Does this mean there are to be no changes here then?
I always thought Anna was a sort of brand name with the role being filled by several people whereas there is and could only ever be one frenchfrank.
I've been wondering about Mr S. I thought he might have gone to Cornwall until Libya and Japan wear themselves out. I wouldn't blame him. I don't place him in my mind as being close to 6music. Just goes to show how wrong I can be. But wasn't he the guy who described it as the perfect example of how not to run a station or is my imagination playing tricks on me?

Personally I wouldn't mind having a sub-forum (along the lines of the Proms or the BaL one) for R4/R7 drama discussions, though if it's cumbersome or overly cluttering to set up then it probably isn't worth bothering. It's just that I do from time to time come across R4 drama broadcasts that I do find interesting, sometimes more interesting than those on R3. For instance the current production of the Cairo Trilogy by the Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz - the first episode broadcast last Friday and still available on LA until this Friday evening. Though an adaptation of novels, not something I generally care for in drama slots, I was interested by the subject matter and also because it was the work of a Nobel Prize winning writer and one whose work I hadn't read at all.

Could we have some "twin towns" with R4/R4E? Links between, say, The Verb, the poetry on Radio 4, and Word of Mouth as well as links for drama on 3 and 4?

We always put 'Do3 -' before the thread title so 'R4 -' or 'R7/R4X -' would flag it up, even if there was no discussion. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. On #23, I agree but I find the figures questionable. I was on the R4 board a lot for several years and saw the participation dwindle. The heavy moderation/censorship, the redesign of the forum, and the removal of one piece and then another. People became demoralised and left it for those reasons, not because of a lack of interest in the programmes.
On #24, I think for "The Verb", it would be near the title of the thread. As in the music magazines, "if you like this, you might like these". For drama, more difficult, unless you are able to group R3 drama productions somehow.Last edited by Guest; 23-03-11, 23:15.

I've just registered over at this R4 new site....in my ol'R3/R4 name Rooooosta....if you have time, can you tell ref where/when this board first materialised....it's obviously been under a dust sheet for some time waiting; should the moment arise, to be resurrected....EEEee it's a reet clunky dinosaur of a board....Should I feel free to advertise it on the R4 CIY board or What??....While CIY is full of nutters [some may consider me to be one] there are some really interesting and funny/eccentric posters that I would sorely miss....and in only 7 days or less....timbong ching

I wasn't meaning to give the new board my personal recommendation but it seemed to have been set up by a genuine R4 listener/messageboarder. The speed at which it appeared is not unusual - I assume it's a free site and they can be set up very quickly.
The very first r3ok site appeared overnight while Mark was plodding along with producing the very first FoR3 forum from scratch: it took him a further fortnight to launch it. Free ones only need a bit of customisation but there are good ones and less good ones from the point of view of software. It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. One of the things I have noticed is that it has a big Radio 4 logo and looks at first glance like it is a BBC site. That might need to be changed. Although the quality can be variable, one of R4/R4E's great strengths is comedy. I hope they have a separate section for it. This is one of the areas where they will differ I think. It is difficult to see how we could have a formal comedy section here on the serious people's forum although there is no shortage of comedians around the place.
