The East London Group @ The Nunnery

For visitors and local yokels I just thought I'd alert the following exhibition by a similar but later, lesser-known gathering of inter-war artists than the Camden Group:

The Nunnery Gallery is a not-for-profit, free, contemporary art space. It hosts thought-provoking exhibitions and events.

Sickert's is the only name I know

Me, too - if asked, I'd've probably hazarded a guess that Albert Turpin was a character from the early days of Coronation Street

But they did good stuff; some examples here:

Very interesting, some beautiful paintings ... and not a bluddy matchstick man in sight

My pleasure, S_A: I'd never have found it without your OP.

These are more like Utrillo I think. It was mentioned on yesterdays lunchtime news on BBC1, though I see now that the show's been on since last month, and lasts until July. I might well go along.

Something very similar occured to me, ami: I love Lowry's work, but there is an intensity and craft to many of these images that leaves him standing, I thought.

I attended this exhibition yesterday, on what was its penultimate day of opening, and so in recommendation I can only refer people to Ferney's link in Message #2, which reproduces many if not all the paintings which were on view. Taking my time in the very relaxed surroundings of the venue, I was only in there for about half an hour, and so made the most of my visit to the East End with a trip back down the Bow Road to the Whitechapel Gallery, where to my amazement a new copy of John Cage's "Silence" was on sale in the bookshop for just £15.99, followed by a stroll around Brick Lane on the one day of the week when most of the street market is not open, ! An enjoyable day had by one, nevertheless.
