Stuck in hotel room with not much worth watching, we gave this a look, as we'd never watched The Fast Show, but didn't find it worth more than a faint smile.

However, in view of the above, it could well have been because we didn't recognise any of the sketches as spoofs of anything we'd seen, and just thought they were doing vaguely funny characters. Perhaps, as with a lot of humour, you needed to be 'tuned in' via previous exposure.

I thought the Fast Show part 2 was only intermittently amusing (though The Trip parody was good, and Rowley Birkin QC's reference to Mahler's 5th raised a smile )

The BBC2 prog is much better overall, I think.

What we saw was called The Fast Show Special, on BBC2 last Monday night (26th) at 9pm, which is what I thought gurnemanz referred to in #4. The rest of the thread wasn't really concerning me. What have I done wrong?

Well, I used to watch The Fast Show in its heyday, and this "special" was nobbut a pale imitation of its former self. (Either that or, heaven forbid, I'm maturing!! A dreadful prospect that I would wish only upon cheeses and port.)

However, the Enfield & Whitehouse spoof "history" was brilliant () - right from the uncanny Schama impersonation. And the merciless way Enfield ribbed his own work (the lack of Baftas) as well as everyone else's was perfect.

Very many thanks for this Caliban. I thought it was hilarious. Stand outs for me (dare I say!?) include the Germans' "trouser tents" ... and Stalin confessing to an urge to purge...

It was lovely seeing a thoughtful, funny, intelligent and yet critical piece about BBC 2's trajectory over the years.

As with last year's An Adventure in Space and Time it made me feel nostalgic, appreciative of well produced programmes and grateful that Auntie (warts and all) is still there...and can still raise her game when she wants to !!

Enfield's Schama by the way was spot on
