    Whitehouse and Enfield on BBC2

I did a lot of chuckling during this

Far more hits than misses, and some genius. Some of the non-specific 'BBC types' are the funniest ('Jonnie Oxford-Cambridge') but also
Bronowski, Thatcher, Yentob, Scandi-Noir, Ask the Family, Masterchef... esp Schama... all get the treatment.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Thanks for posting the iplayer link to it, Cali - some of the humour went by a bit quick for the first time around!

I'm not sure the Monty Python parodies quite succeeded at whatever they were trying to say, but it was daring to have attempted them.

I made a point of setting the HD/BD recorder. One to savour, I feel.

The Fast Show Special tonight had a hilarious spoof of Steve Coogan's The Trip with coughing Bob Fleming and his dining companion Jed.

The best thing H&P have done for ages. They really went at some sacred cows. Mostly hilarious.

Stuck in hotel room with not much worth watching, we gave this a look, as we'd never watched The Fast Show, but didn't find it worth more than a faint smile.

However, in view of the above, it could well have been because we didn't recognise any of the sketches as spoofs of anything we'd seen, and just thought they were doing vaguely funny characters. Perhaps, as with a lot of humour, you needed to be 'tuned in' via previous exposure.

Don - you realise this thread's about a different programme... not merely on BBC2, but about BBC2

I thought the Fast Show part 2 was only intermittently amusing (though The Trip parody was good, and Rowley Birkin QC's reference to Mahler's 5th raised a smile )

The BBC2 prog is much better overall, I think.

I've just watched it (the right one, that is) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some nice self-parody, too.

                  Now you're confusing me!

What we saw was called The Fast Show Special, on BBC2 last Monday night (26th) at 9pm, which is what I thought gurnemanz referred to in #4. The rest of the thread wasn't really concerning me. What have I done wrong?

A quick click on Caliban's link on #1 will clarify.

Well, I used to watch The Fast Show in its heyday, and this "special" was nobbut a pale imitation of its former self. (Either that or, heaven forbid, I'm maturing!! A dreadful prospect that I would wish only upon cheeses and port.)

However, the Enfield & Whitehouse spoof "history" was brilliant () - right from the uncanny Schama impersonation. And the merciless way Enfield ribbed his own work (the lack of Baftas) as well as everyone else's was perfect.

(There: I hope that puts gurne's and DonP's comments in context. )

                        Hello There,

Very many thanks for this Caliban. I thought it was hilarious. Stand outs for me (dare I say!?) include the Germans' "trouser tents" ... and Stalin confessing to an urge to purge...

It was lovely seeing a thoughtful, funny, intelligent and yet critical piece about BBC 2's trajectory over the years.

As with last year's An Adventure in Space and Time it made me feel nostalgic, appreciative of well produced programmes and grateful that Auntie (warts and all) is still there...and can still raise her game when she wants to !!

Enfield's Schama by the way was spot on

                        Best Wishes,

                        Tevot

I loved the 'Head of Drama' - "he was a lovely boy, a lovely lovely boy...."
