Another Good Read

I have just been having a good read about Julie Birchill, which gave me the idea of where to post an item on dictionaries. Oh, I know! Not many people enjoy 'reading' a dictionary, but I can't leave this one down! You can find it here:

This is a fairly recent version of the previously standard printed versions, which are also available for consultation on the site. Have a read and you'll see why it can be quite a page turner. It even has pronunciations for many of the words - I understand that the project is not yet complete. One thing that fascinates me is listening to the difference between the Ulster pronunciation and the others. Luckily the written word is the same for all.

Regardless of my opinion of Julie Birchill, I'll risk stating the view that I admire the gallantry of Beef Oven in the face of some vile remarks about the woman in question, and of course jean has quietly and incisively stood up for her as well.

She really doesn't need people standing up for her, in any way.
She has been publishing her invective and bile for 30 plus years. She can take it, god knows she has dished it out for long enough. There are plenty of aspiring musicians that she has put the boot into, for instance.
Most people are just criticising her output anyway, which is fair game in her trade.

I had a look at the dictionary. I'm sure it is of interest to people. I was responding to your comment, on this thread, about JB.

Have I said something to offend? All my posts about JB are about her work. Nothing personal at all.

Can't offer an insightful comment about that one, Padraig. But narey a day passes by when, as long as I'm near a computer, I don't consult the OED via the local library website: meanings, derivations, pronunciations ... Bliss!

This is the Bristol Central Library page which details all the reference works available. If you click on 'Oxford English Dictionary' the options are to access 'OED from a library' or 'OED from home'. I access it from home which means entering the barcode of my library card.
