    The Botton of the barrel

T-Nog drew our attention in another place to the following:

'Occasionally I feel I must stretch my horizons and have a go at Mozart, but find him too jolly, or Beethoven, but find him too emotional, or Schubert, but find him too limp.'

Where to start with critique as profound as this?
    Too true...

But having now read the entire 'inside back page' by the ineffable Alain foisted on an unwary public by Gramophone, I thought it deserved a thread of its own.

It's a pretty toe-curling read from start to finish, but even worse than the above quote, this made me shout:

"Listening to CDs in cars is for me the very best way to take in music. While obeying all traffic regulations, I love the ability to press the accelerator in line with certain movements, and to brake likewise."

I'm struggling to find the adjectives to deal with that, especially the little clarification of his law-abiding attention to detail.

Beyond both criticism and parody, our Alain...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

He sounds just like the bloke that I always encountered whilst approaching Sandbach Services on my journey from N to S.
And he gets paid for writing this drivel? Givvus a Job!

An excellent thread, Caliban. I shall adopt 'T-Nog' as my nom de Hip-Hop forthwith.

As for that ubiquitous ball of banality, Alain Lobotomy, here's another choice nugget:

'Bach is also very good to listen to on aeroplanes. Admittedly a lot of the subtlety of the music is drowned out by the engines but it is terrific to be able to marry up the more hopeful chords to something like dawn breaking out over the Himalayas.'

          Wow. Just...wow.

I suppose each century gets the philosophers they deserve: 18th Century: Kant; Rousseau; Hume. 19th Century: Schopenhauer; Nietzsche; Kierkegaard; Hegel. 20th Century: Sartre; Camus; de Beauvoir. 21 Century: de Botton. the commodified thought bubbles of a vapid, post-modern cartoon character. The joke, alas, is on us.

          p.s. excellent thread title

Sensible people assume it's the new SuperUltraLightweight Nokia.
It really is the most stupid title for a canned music magazine

Simon Charmer, Alain de Bottom or Roger Scrotum. Which one would win in a fight?

that is such a definitive account of the bottom of the barrel!

the rice pudding would win the fight though ....
