    Israel & apartheid

"Uh-oh" I thought as I started to read this article, "another polarised position which will get us nowhere"

Alice Walker declines request to publish Israeli edition of The Color Purple

Pulitzer prize-winning author cites 'apartheid and persecution of the Palestinian people' in letter to Yediot Books

But reading on, I realised that it is a thoughtful piece that makes its case and leaves the door for discussion and change wide open ... or am I being naive?

Amateur51, I wouldn't have taken the same decision because I support constructive cultural cooperation. Context, though, matters. I apply the Petroc Priniciple but there is no way on earth that I would have played at Sun City.

However, I think you get the measure of it spot on. It is up to her as the author and it would be even if she were uninformed and knee-jerk. The fact that she has learnt about it, thought about it, and weighed it up - I wouldn't be critical.

I saw the report in Wednesday's Independent, & thought her comments were well thought through & coming from a deep personal commitment. But then I wouldn't expect anything else from Alice Walker.

Am, the door is always wide open, & Ms Walker & others ready to welcome the Israeli government in for tea & a chat, but I'm afraid that the government won't cross the threshold.
