The Essay - Art from the Outside

As recommended by mondays daily telegraph, certainly looks interesting.

Psychologist Professor Victoria Tischler celebrates 'outsider art.' Art created by the marginalised, the untrained, those outside the establishment.

The fourth essay has some good views on hallucinations, as someone with schizophrenia I find this very interesting.

....I'm piggy-backing on this thread as I couldn't find a souly general Essay thread....It is a shame that R3 do not do as many podcast do on iplayer do i.e. deliver the series as a whole in one dollop....case in point Death in Trieste 5 episodes on 5 consecutive night this week....i dare say after Friday the series will be on iplayer....but this does not aid memory short/longterm....the next thing is on the way, will i remember, will something crop up....etc etc .Just how many people will be listening live (this dryish/research subject), how many will listen daily or in some fashion to individual repeats on iplayer....R3 HERE I AM, ready to listen , BUT....

I used to listen to radio 3 non stop after work and often fell asleep with the late programs so being able to catch up via the website is really usefull, now i have to juggle radio with housework and childcare and watching tv.

I strongly recommmend Wednesday's (30 Oct) edition of The Essay about the lost Haydn sonatas. A good example of a scripted radio talk, the decline if which genre we discussed recently.

The correlation between Artistic Productivity and Mental Health, particularly bipolar disorder, has always interested me. There are so many examples of Artists having extremely productive periods followed by long spells where they seem creatively barren. Beethoven and Tchaikovsky are just two examples from the world of music. One of the most striking is Edvard Munch, who so impressively captured his descent into Depression (The Scream is relatively cheerful compared to some works that followed it). And then there is the whole question as to whether the Mental Instability is necessary for the genius to emerge and whether it would be better for the Artist legacy to have them suffer and not be treated

Ah yes - the starving artist in a garret image. I don't go along with it.

Can you point out the connection between being hungry and mental health?

I like Scottish poet, Kenneth Steven. Last week he voiced five essays on Radio 3 on the subject of Scottish gemstones following in the footsteps of 18th century, Hoy-born, Heddle Matthew who travelled across Scotland identifying the gems of Scotland. I enjoyed it very much as Kenneth travelled across the country talking of his love of treasure hunting.

Of course it can, but S-A doesn't go along with it - see Post 11; strange....
