    RSC 2016 Hamlet BBC 4 21.vi.20

Well worth watching - some excellent central performances.
Full of music, dance, thought and cleverness. And so, so slick! What I love about it is that it doesn't hang about but truly gets on with delivering without self-referential over-musing.

Paapa Essiedu plays Hamlet in Simon Godwin's critically acclaimed RSC production.

I agree. A relevant and insightful updating. At first I thought I might not be convinced but as it got going I became riveted. It must have been strikingly effective in the theatre - the music and bright colours.

Any opinions on last night’s RSC Merchant of Venice on BBC4?

An unusual angle, I thought, with an Antonio-Bassanio gay affair causing an awkward love triangle with Portia.

Rather different from my O-level preparation watching Olivier at the Old Vic (1970).

I thought it excellent. Why Antonio should have got himself into such a difficult position suddenly made sense. It also happens to be a play that forces us to consider the importance of historical context - it is deeply anti-semitic, but that doesn't mean that we should ban it/pull it down/cancel it. We need to learn from it.
