Penny Gore on Janacek: The Essay Monday 16 April

15 minutes of sheer pleasure. The rest of this week looks promising too.

I find it incomprehensible how this programme and Music from Inside are made by the same radio station.

Shall be interested to listen because Penny Gore is not a music specialist, just a presenter with a long experience of introducing music on Radio 3, a thoroughly professional attitude - and, yes, an ideal radio voice.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Also features on our satnav. Must have been very tedious reciting all those driving instructions.

I always think of the lady who recorded all the stops for travellers on the rail network, wondering how long it took her to do - or, for that matter, the Speaking Clock!

The thread title is quite a bit misleading but I thought the programme deserved publicity. Penny Gore’s subject wasn’t Janacek per se and the information about the composer wasn’t anything new but her reflection on her life and her thoughts about the composer were combined seamlessly into one story. If you can spot a good wedding or funeral speech, I think you’ll find this a good sort.

I sometimes think Eric Clapton's 'After Midnight' should be dedicated to the woman who recorded the speaking clock!

Though that is the title of the episode. The blurb says: "Radio 3 presenter Penny Gore celebrates a composer particularly important to her: the Moravian Leos Janacek, whose music is shot through with the uncertainties of life."

I suppose we (I) listen to a programme entitled The Essay with a different mindset from, say, Saturday Classics, now Inside Music. In the latter, I usually find the presenter’s personal experience and thoughts rather tiresome whereas in The Essay, that’s what I am ready to hear. I suppose it wasn’t fair to compare this with the new Saturday programme but surely the same standard should be expected?

Yes - does it need a new presenter - perhaps Penny Gore?

But the would she not be the choice for so much of R3 output - understated, good radio voice and tells you what's on the tin!
