Heard it tonight: the desperation, matched with a nobility in suffering. Very fine production from BBC Wales.

We studied this in Russian at school. It awakened my interest in Chekhov. Will have to listen.

My favourite Chekhov play and one of my favourite plays. It is very hard to get it right. I heard this production at time of broadcast and thought it was no more than OK.

The Olivier film looks like what it is - a staged record of his National Theatre production but the performances (particularly Olivier's) are excellent.

The best version I know of is a recording by Caedmon, with Siobhan McKenna, Zena Walker and Caroline John as the sisters: Cyril Cusack as Chebutikin and Ian McKellen as Tusenbach.
