Serendipity at work when my eye caught the title of this 60 mins documentary,
Don't be Rude on the Road, R4, tonight, 22.00hrs. Alan Dein revisits some of the Central Office of Information's (COI) most memorable Public Information Films. I hugely enjoyed working at the COI, Films Div for almost 20 years after I quit a career as a thesp, although this was still useful when I could substitute for an indisposed presenter in front of a camera. Gradually worked my way up the greasy pole and headed a small marketing unit before retirement in the
90s. My learning curve enhanced by first rate directors, Peter Greenaway and Hugh Hudson along the way as well as a team of fine editors, John Wilson, Fred Goodland etc. Also learned how to cope with the formidable Dept of Transport committee members as I struggled to persuade them to lessen a tendency to use a hectoring tone in the 'fillers' to match a more sophisticated tone of the 1970s - softly, softly etc! Happy, happy memories alongside some shudders.
