Between the Ears - Sat 19th March

Did anyone hear this? It consisted of a sort of eavesdropping on a conversation between a violinist and a violin-maker. It was annoyingly punctuated by The Trout theme, pizzicato. As a piece of slightly way-out art in its own right, I guess the programme had some validity. As far as informing anyone about the work of a lutier it was a dead loss. Scratchings, scraping and bangings are no good without pictures!

Feature about violin maker Andrea Ortona's work creating a copy of a Guarneri Kemp violin.

Isn't the idea of the programme that it creates 'sound pictures'? Not supposed to be informative.

I remember when they had a programme which had extracts from Pliny's Natural History, in Latin. I asked if the extracts could be posted on the R3 website in advance - which they obligingly did (the Latin, that is). But I felt afterwards it was 'cheating' really because it wasn't about what Pliny had to say: it was about the sound of Latin with appropriate sound effects in the background.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

OK, the programme was a 'sound picture'. Couldn't they have conjured up from their sound kaleidoscope something less mundane than The Plucked Trout?

A bit of originality that didn't work?
