Kansas’s most famous quack, John Romulus Brinkley, who performed surgical goat-gland transplants on men as a kind of early-twentieth-century Viagra, and whose wife, Lee recalled, had once blasted Bertrand Russell for promoting free love while the Brinkleys were trying to sell it.
