A loud hurrah for the R3/R4 radio coverage of the Miller centenary in features and broadcast plays. First rate performances, expertly pitched, for DAB technology, to draw listeners in to the intensity of the narrative of Death of a Salesman and A View from the Bridge. I sat enthralled listening to both broadcasts.
Several vignettes in The Essay, Mon-Fri, with fascinating insights from Richard Eyre & Tony Kushner, in particular. The longer features scored with playing time up to an hour; Archive on 4, Attention Must Be Paid, (17 Oct at 20.00hrs) had Christopher Bigsby tracing the author's life and work with contributions from Dustin Hoffman, Warren Mitchell and Brian Dennehy who had all played Willy Loman over the years. AM always stressed the importance of 'making the lines land' - I like that! How well he coped with brusque interviewing at his HUAA appearances. He was convicted later of contempt of court but the verdict was overturned on Appeal. Glad to have recorded many of these broadcasts on minidisc, or make quick reference to AM's autobiography, Time Bends, a Life, (Methuen, London, 1987)to fill in the gaps.
