Radio 3 schedule changes (‘edging away from speech')
I will now be "rocking up" (sic) to the France Musique "neighbourhood" exclusively. Waving goodbye to "Friday night is music night" with not a tear in my eye.
Relived that "Through the Night" is still on the new April line-up.
But, Saturday's TTN isn't listed - does "Sundays 00:30 – 06:30 Through The Night (30 mins earlier on weekends)" mean that Saturday's 6 hour TTN is back?
looks as tho R2.5 is about to take over - but 3hrs of Tom Service ... - anyway I've got more cds than i need and these days usually find I prefer to work in silence - most listening is done on the journeys to/from the IoM with a good reproduction from my laptop + headphones
I reckon it’s to save money, Replacing expensive location or studio recording sessions by one artist or group with cheaper EBU pre records. Something that’s already been done to Afternoon concert.
So far the casualty tally runs
Lunchtime recital four days a week.
30 mins of Record Review
Jazz J to Z ..
Skellers and Gore appear berthless..
I’m sure there’s more …
The afternoon space is losing out - it took me a while to see it due to CotW being moved, but Breakfast and EC are each being extended by 30 minutes, which comes out of the afternoon allowance. So the afternoon begins at 1pm, rather than midday, but finishes as now at 5pm. The current schedule has 4 days 12 - 5, and Friday has TS jumping in at 4-30.
So how lucky are we? More of what we don't want and less of what we do.

Yes good spot : that’s probably the biggest change of all. So an extra hour of presenter led CD and chat programmes and half an hour less of recorded repackaged concerts. Again I suspect it’s money. Even though the EBU stuff is free there’s still copyright and possibly performance repeat fees plus the production cost of listening to it all and Selecting it. That really adds up time wise .CD’s don’t need that level of checking.
I hope Petroc is getting a 20 per cent pay increase but somehow I doubt it !
Katie Derham is about to interview the Controller about the changes . Just don’t see how she can possibly conduct the sort of interview I’d like to see.

Breakfast is being extended back by 30 mins on Sat and Sun, to start at 6.30 instead of 7. On the weekdays Breakfast is extended forwards by 30 mins, to end at 9,30. But far from Essential Classics losing 30 mins, it is gaining 30 mins to swallow up the CotW slot. Is that right?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Yes COTW moves to the afternoon. So R3 is live presenter led 06.30 to 13.00.
Well Katie Derham just gave the Controller the easiest ride conceivable. Of all the many objections raised here and in the Guardian comments section not a peep. Even ended by saying how much she was looking forward to presenting Friday Night Is Music Night so she has a direct conflict of interest (a breach of editorial guidelines in fact) . The question is what is that programme doing on Radio 3 ? It’s a Classicsl music station not an outlet for commercial music produced in Broadway and the West End. And I love that music - but it’s not what R3 is for is it?
Worked for forty years on and off at the Beeb as a journalist and that was a travesty of journalism. I’d complain to OFCOM but what’s the point ? I mean how can you interview your boss ?
So are more people going to switch to on demand reception for radio services - and how?
For me, the easiest and most flexible solution is to have an AV receiver that either has WiFi and Google Chromecast streaming built in, or has a spare HDMI socket I can plug a physical Chromecast device into. Then I can control it from my Android phone or tablet running the BBC Sounds app, or an internet radio app, or a podcast app, most of which are compatible with Chromecast streaming. I can also control it from the Chrome browser running on my PC. In the Apple world, you can do much the same thing with Airplay. If you don't have space for a full AVR + speaker setup, there are smaller self-contained networked speakers that support Chromecast or Airplay or both.
Because the apps are regularly updated and Google and Apple have an interest in maintaining the Chromecast and Airplay standards, you generally don't run into the sort of compatibility problems that some users of internet radio hardware devices have been caught by, as when the BBC discontinued the streams they relied on. And you can use this method for both live and on-demand services.
