    McKellen as the Overlarge Knight

Intriguing idea, Sir Ian as Falstaff in a more-interesting-than-some new presentation. I've been looking up Robert Icke, the director who apparently 'searches for a return "to the impulse of the original play, to clear away the accumulated dust of its performance history. So much of great drama was profoundly troubling when it was first done. The word radical actually means to go back to the root."
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

....I'm not carrying any baggage on this one....nor any accumulated dust....though it is a stupid thing to say after Simon Russell -Beale has done it....But I can see the appeal to Sir Ian : he will be able to dine out for years on stories about his foam body suit and it's measuring....

Simon Russell Beale was so good in the BBC Hollow Crown production it's hard to imagine that anyone could better him, but it's always worth seeing Ian McKellen. Toby Jones was also excellent in a Drama on 3 production which is still available on BBC Sounds. We might moan about the BBC but gosh when it's good it is so very good.
