Fanny and Alexander: Do3 29 March

A new two-part radio version of Ingmar Bergman's Academy Award-winning 1982 film about a Swedish family at the start of the twentieth century. The critically acclaimed original work is one of the longest films in cinematic history, and is a beguiling drama about childhood where imagination is found to be a passport out of dread and into mystery. Adapted for radio by Sharon Oakes.

Songs composed and performed by Carl Prekopp

Through the eyes of Alexander, we witness the delights and conflicts of the Ekdahl family.

Will it match the film? The music seems to be from somewhat different world.

Part 2 will be going out 11.15pm to 12.30am, acc to RT (the earlier Live in Concert being a 'sequence' of music from King's College Chapel). If the Bergman film was one of the longest in cinematic history this must have cut out quite a lot: even in two episodes it only lasts 2 1/2 hours by my arithmetic. (Carl Prekopp has musical talents too?)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Well, the FILM is one of the mightiest, very troubling, and brilliantly made. Radio Play has a heck of an act to follow.

Well, that’s odd. I’ve just posted on the EMS board about EBU Day Music for Holy Week, and its part three starts at 23.00. No mention on the webpage about Part 2 of F&A.

French Frank has looked at the radiotimes website listings for the following Sunday, Easter Day, which claims that an organ recital will run from 7.30 until 11.15pm, to be followed by F&A part 2 from 11.15 until 12.30am.

The "official" BBC website's Radio 3 listings for Easter Day should be posted tomorrow morning. Until then, I guess that the radiotimes listing for the concert is wrong. However, it may be that F&A part 2 is very long, say 9.45pm to 12.30am, with an interval from 11.00 to 11.15pm. Tomorrow will tell ...

HG is right - Part 1 of F&A is this week, EBU Day for Holy Week; Part 2 - according to RT - is next week, Easter Day.

The King's College recital - according to their own brochure, starts at 7.30pm and ends c. 8.45pm, so there is currently a gap from 8.45 until 11.15 - unless, as HG surmises, this is an even longer second half to F&A ...

New R3 schedule: There will apparently be some Schumann music from the Bergman film after F&A, but it's still listing F&A as beginning at 10pm with the earlier live recital being 2 1/2 hours long.

I'm confused, but it may be that somewhere amongst all the snippets there is a clear schedule.

              Easter Day evening schedule:
              7.30 Live in Concert
              10.00 Drama on 3
              11.15 Schumann music

Live in Concert is usually scheduled as 7.30 to 10.00, and recorded music is broadcast after the live music.

But don't miss the early start this Sunday of Fanny and Alexander part 1 at 9.45, because of the EBU Holy Week music disrupting the usual schedule.
