You don't get to present news and current affairs programmes and chat shows in Northern Ireland by being a never was. Having been on his programme there at least 3 times I can vouch for his being a most skilled and versatile interviewer (my favourite memory was going out of the studio just as Kenneth Branagh was coming in). His arts pedigree is at least as impressive as that of most of his R3 colleagues. He's a witty, charming and modest man (I've met him away from work, through mutual friends). You either like his style or you don't, an idea that wouldn't shock him in the least.

Just one reservation, he is a member of the Tárrega Club - that should be the TarrEga Club.

There are lots of technically skilled broadcasters who manage to time bilge and nonsense to a tee- one example for racing fans on here would be Derek Thompson who apparently is highly skilled at coming in exactly on time and producers love him - racegoers generally think he talks endless nonsense . Sean Rafferty's presentation on In Tune is a blend of bland obsequiousness and fatuous comment that I cannot abide .

Well, let's see what Alan Davey makes of him (and others!). He could decree a change of style, or he could have a mass clear-out, like Nicholas Kenyon did. Roger Wright got rid of or sidelined several presenters I liked - Stephanie Hughes, Penny Gore, not to mention the unforgiveable crime of losing Catherine Bott.....

Well, you could always not listen. I switch off when Suzy Klein takes over from him - now she's irritating.

Perhaps Barbirollians will forward to the controller his thoughts on all the presenters, giving marks out of 10 for how much he likes them? :-) Who knows, perhaps AD will agree entirely and thank him for backing his decision to drop all the presenters Barbirollians 'cannot abide'?

That said, Sean is one of the few (the only?) presenter(s) who has stayed in place presenting the same programme after being appointed by Nicholas Kenyon. And In Tune is the probably the one surviving programme that has survived intact with minimal changes (just the hours). After a good 15 years in that slot (and studiously avoiding the question of age ) it will surely be that one way or another his time is limited at Radio 3.

My personal feeling is that it would be distasteful for ANYONE to be throwing hats in the air. (Always keep a-hold of nurse ...)

In Tune is an atrocious programe . It does indeed sound like a private club .

FF who knows maybe we will be lucky and they will clear them out after all .

In so far as it sounds like a group of friends having a jolly time together I suppose you could say that it sounds like a private club, but not one I feel excluded from. I've seen Sean Rafferty in action when it was broadcast from Glasgow, & he had an extremely good rapport with guests and the public. He is, I think, very good at his job.

It sounds as if it's changed since I last listened. I thought it was a presenter playing some recorded music and also interviewing a guest or possibly two, with some live music (I saw the late Humphrey Carpenter in action. One of the guests, I seem to remember, was Ian Pace. We did not speak :-) ). There wasn't any public present except me.

It was certainly a pleasant surprise when Ian Skelley replaced Ms Klein as presenter of last night's In Tune, (14 Jan). Low-key without the enforced jollity and cheesy gags from the usual team. Imogen Cooper at the pianoforte and articulate in conversation; a happy reminder of what used to be.

It's sometimes presented from a public location - as it was from the Festival Hall not long ago. I saw it some years ago when Glasgow was the City of Music (or something of that kind) & it was broadcast from an up-market shopping centre in the city centre.
It's still the same format - a mixture of guests, live music, recorded music, information about events, new recordings, etc.

Good programme, In Tune. I like both Suzy Klein and Sean Rafferty. I have seen the latter present the programme live, twice, from SageGateshead at the Freethinking Festival and would agree with all the favourable comments above. I did also enjoy Ian Skelly on Monday, though. SR was back in the presenter's chair tonight.

SR, KD and CBH are the only R3 presenters I consider as being beyond hope. Even Charles Hazelwood had his good points. The rest are just doing the job they have been given (though the same might be said of the 3 mentioned too).

The new controller agrees with you - thinks it's magic... http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/radio3/en...adio_and_music

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

And I ended the week at the Barbican with the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing doing Nielsen’s 3rd Symphony

not sure that 'doing' is necessary
