I found a satisfactory compromise by a transfer from off-air 2006 video to DVD, a few days ago, Prokofiev's "War & Peace". Graham Vick's 1991 Covent Garden production was reworked for Kirov Opera, Marinsky Theatre, Leningrad, - a sumptuous setting for a 'live' recording conducted by Valery Gergiev. Engrossed by the nuances in the 'Peace' in Pt 1, (1hrs 50 mins) and the full drama of 'War', Part II, (2hrs 10mins). No lumbering sets or thumping noises behind traverse curtains - a simple backdrop for projected images sufficed and Vick's production raised the ante for future productions. I've checked on its commercial availability and note that the asking price is £100+. Made me glad that I'd stored my video collection in Sainsbury's egg cardboard boxes!

With spare time on your hands would you rather:

Work on my milk quota schedules

      Wrestle a bear

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

an other Woody Allen joke concerning W&P is:

"I went on a speed reading course and I read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It is about Russia."
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

I must confess that I do not think it is a good book. I cannot read anything that describes violence. Exactly the same applies to many of Shakespere's "tragedies" - there is violence in them so they are not good plays. Much the same may be said of Homer, even. Violence and Art are utterly incompatible.

I don't think it's been mentioned here but the BBC are just about to start filming a new version of War & Peace for transmission later in 2015.
The latest TV adaptation by the prolific Andrew Davies begins filming in January in Russia, Lithuania and Latvia
