    P.D.James

P.D James had died, aged 94

One of the greats, to me at any rate.

    Indeed very sad news.

One always admired and respected her for her sharp mind, even while not always agreeing with her political standpoints.

Very sad –she was a splendid lady (I was lucky enough to meet her on a couple of occasions), and what a wonderfully productive life!

It has become commonplace to say that she did not write detective stories, rather novels about murder and the detective who is tasked with catching the murderer. Nevertheless I think that is true, and anybody who believes crime writing is an inferior form hasn't read hers properly. My favourite, or to be more correct the one that moved me the most, is "Innocent Blood", about a murder and its after-effects, in which the detective makes only a brief appearance.
