    Free Thinking Festival 2014

I notice that very many regular programmes have special editions coming from the Free Thinking Festival - In Tune, Live in Concert, Free Thinking, Breakfast, CD Review, Music Matters, Saturday Classics, Sound of Cinema, The Choir, Words and Music, The Essay, The Verb.

    But not Choral Evensong!

I have just been asked to point out that Gloucester Cathedral's Choral Evensong may not sit easily with Freethinkers, but Friday's Free Thinking Lecture will be delivered by Karen Armstrong, one of the world’s leading thinkers about religion, arguing that, in the current global situation, a recognition of how little we know is the only way to peace.

is there the slightest chance of an utterance of real and ugly heresy at this meedjafesteventinnit ....

... and if the meedjafestclonenet held a heresy festival how could it possibly be heresy .... or true ... or most importantly in any way useful?

That'll be because there is no live CE between the Friday and Sunday while the festival is on - only the repeat from the previous Wednesday, as usual .

Music Matters covers an Issue For Our Times with:

"Why should I care? Petroc Trelawny chairs a debate about how far knowledge can enhance our understanding and appreciation of classical music. How much do we really need to know about composers' lives in order to be able to engage fully with their creative output? Why the seemingly endless pursuit of the most authentic performance practice, or the definitive critical edition? How does knowing more than just the best bits improve the listening experience?"

(Not sure why they all have to trek up to Gateshead to discuss it, though)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

One contributer is based in Glasgow and one in Manchester, and the chair will be already there to introduce the previous evening's Live in Concert. And the live studio audience in Gateshead invariably puts the discussion in a different perspective.

                  Will there be phone-ins?

I would have thought that was self evident - it's the only place to be!

                    And be there, I shall.

The London Jazz Festival (14-23 Nov) will be a welcome follow-on, mehopes.

..ah now that is an altogether different matter ... though on reflection, my pessimism returns ... it will be a meedjamarketingclonenet jobbie as well eh ....
