Why Are Maps Still So Powerful? 19.08.14 - 9.30 p.m.

I have long had an interest in maps, new and old, and have a wide selection. On my ipad, I have the ukmap app, which gives road maps at 1:250,000 for Scotland, Wales, and England. If you want more detail for part of the country you can download areas at 1:25,000 and 1:10,000. It links into the ipad's GPS, so on long rail journeys (which I have been known to take ) I can watch the blue dot and see exactly where I am.

The National Library of Scotland has an excellent collection of old maps which have been scanned and are available online. Some offer the facility to compare old maps and current maps on the screen.

I haven't really been anywhere, except here with me, as Stan Laurel once said. I have been maintaining a low profile recently. No particular reason.

Attended a fascinating talk by Nicholas Crane last night as part of the Royal Geographical Society regional theatres programme. Great stories of some of his exploits. There are two more dates: Southampton 13th November and Brecon 19th November.
