Excellent doc/music/play. Fine performances. The accelerating paranoia and terror in Gurney and the appallingly clumsy, patronising and ignorant treatment he received plus the songs / poems made gripping listening.
My only quibble is that many of the songs actual WORDS were very difficult to hear. Fine musical lines being spun by singers, and fantastic playing by Mr Burneside, but the actual words not.
And given that the narrative of Gurney's life was hugely carried by the songs, maybe the R3 website could have given us some key transcripts?
But nevertheless. a very fine programmer and under all the wearisome hype and guff being spouted on the BBC about the 1WW, this was echt-R3 and highly engaging and to the point.
