What we may post about and when we can do that....

It seems we are having a problem agreeing about what we are allowed to post about....when we are allowed to do so....lets hope we all agree that using the House Rules is the only way to go forward; as to the 'how' we do so....

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

A messageboard is like any social media - ideally you wouldn't say anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face during a real-life conversation with them whilst chatting in a pub or on the No. 57 bus but unfortunately anonymity seems to cloud peoples judgement. I didn't see the final insults flung about on the now deleted thread but those responsible should ask questions of themselves as to why they thought it perfectly ok to launch into personal attacks. (Off-topic re internet abuse, I see this morning the guy who posted offensive tweets about Mary Beard, the classicist, has issued an apology only because someone threatened to tell his Mum what he'd been saying! Perhaps people here should also consider what their Mum might say she saw their postings ........ ?

The 'your mum' test is excellent, but the one for me is to never say anything from your keyboard that you wouldn't say to someone's face.

There are a few people on these boards who go by their real names and I really respect them for that.

My mum would without doubt say something like "there's rude you are". (Hello mum, if you're reading this.)

they are mostly cunning pseudonyms, Kips.

Our "lying fallow" friend really is called Mr Thropplenoggin though.
He told me, so it must be true.

Thing is most people are nice as pie to each other's face, but wouldn't that make for a dreadfully boring messageboard? If we are all too frightened to say what we really think for fear of hurting another person's feelings what's the point in posting? I want to hear what people really think; to express themselves passionately. As we're all using noms de keyboards anyway I find it surprising that some peeps seem to take offence so easily. It's all a bit of fun innit?

I wonder how different things would be if we had to use our real names. As has been pointed out, some already do so and I'd have done so too if I hadn't taken my lead from what I could see others doing on the old BBC boards.

It seems strange to me that people take it all so seriously and agree with Sir Velo that it's all a bit of fun. Mostly.

Anyway, has there been yet another bust up?

Well, there was the famous one of Henry Wood that's been widely reported as the one behind which Nina Stemme recently hid whilst having her tryst with the singer playing Siegfried, but somehow I don;t think that this is quite what you're asking about here...

I don't particularly want to hear people being passionate about their opposing views. I agree, though, that I'm not sure why anyone gets worked up by what a pseudonym says on an internet forum. It doesn't actually matter what they think, and you're never likely to meet them (knowingly).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

... interesting that we react as if we were real .... but we have to treat life as life it were real too eh?

it is not so much that opposing views are interesting as contrary argument, preferably well enough made ... bad manners usually follow an unconvincing opposition ....
