He's not the only tetchy one. I've been really surprised in this thread to have seen the usual suspects going for someone whom I've always judged to be on the side of social and individual justice; he was after all up against two opponents and a presenter, having presented the bulk of his case early on in the programme and not interrupted or been in other ways rude to them. I think the criticisms are at best way over the top.

That's where we differ....I don't think he was 'up against two opponents' (that was his mistake)....he was spikey for no reason....it was a discussion not a debate. He was rude to Harriet Sargent. Nobody made any attempt to rubbish Kens arguments, they were more subtle and gentle in their questioning....it's not that sort of programme....

I agree, I too have 'judged (him) to be on the side of social and individual justice' ,but that doesn't mean that I cannot criticise him surely. If by 'usual suspects', you mean 'lefty usual suspects', well you know I am that....

As a grumpy old man , I think I recognised a grumpy old man (Ken)....as a grumpy old man with some nostalgia for the past , again I recognised a kindred spirit. I recognise too that I am not always right if you give a subject a deeper more sympathetic viewing of all the facts and nuances (both modern and old)....I believe Ken is stuck in a bit of a rut that he fails to peer over....

....I may be a grumpy old man (with genuflection to you OAP's ahem cough)....but I am always polite and curteous [sp?] in public....

....I look forward to seeing Kens film....

It's on in several places in West Yorks, but in Bradford it's at the National Media Museum, formerly National Museum of Photography, Film and Television.

I found this on the NT Live website:

Search for screenings at your local cinema for National Theatre Live. See upcoming titles, release dates and trailers for the best British theatre screening at your local cinema.

thanks very much for the tip serial apologist!

                  the telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/f...45-review.html

i went to see 'the spirit of 45' live streamed (from a london cinema) yesterday......a sell out, attended mainly by the 'oldies' and the 'youngies'. 5

i thought the film really constructive, there couldn't be a more timely re-usage of archive rushes. the discussion, hosted by jeremy hardy, was a fantastic bonus too.

a loud and hearty cheer is due for the london cinema that 'took the risk', of accommodating public discussion - allowing 42 other cinemas to benefit simultaneously.

last week's 'the film show' http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01r5s22(still available, till thursday) on r4, made for a more interesting discussion than 'start the week' i thought. 'the film show' features the ('avid' edit prog) that editors of the archive rushes used, and they explain their own responses to seeing 'the spirit' (and identifying it in their own older relatives).

good to see the 'elephant in our room' thread developing btw, many themes in posts resonating with yesterday's public discussion & questions.

I know - and I have to go out, dammit!

Thanks for raising the alert though, eighth.
