    We know when we understand:
Almighty God is a living man.
You can fool some people sometimes,
But you can't fool all the people all the time.
So now we see the light (What you gonna do?),
We gonna stand up for our rights! (Yeah, yeah, yeah!)

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!

two main reasons for people costing the benefit budget:
              age
no job income or too low job income
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

this thread is about austerity as a confidence trick to fulfil the instincts of the right for a small state without welfare, your comment makes the point Simon ... the numbers just do not support your statement that they are main causes, as opposed to minor problems .... and compared to tax dodging, miniscule .... and alas the people at the top are not idle, not in the least ...

For UK banks, under either measure, the implicit subsidy amounts to at least tens of billions of pounds per year, often stretching to three figures. For the global banks, the subsidy is worth at least
hundreds of billions of dollars per year, on occasions four figures. These numbers are eye-popping. To give some context, they are a large chunk, and sometimes exceed, the measured valued-added of the financial sector to annual GDP. Recent revisions to support ratings do little to make a dent in them. Because they measure risk mispricing by bank debtors, they capture the extent of dilution in debtor discipline arising from time-inconsistency. The scale of subsidy suggests there is a considerable distance to travel before debtor discipline could be fully effective in checking risk-taking.

                    Haldane
they are very busy lending their chums billions and billions of taxpayers money to prop up the banking casino ... meanwhile impoverishing the general public
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

and this is an intelligent, non ideological analysis of what problems there are with the welfare system ...

of course it is far better that the poor are evicted for having an extra bedroom than a banker should lose a bonus ... or Osborne run out of squash partners .....

Agreed, but some of the poor shouldn't be evicted, and not all bankers are good.

That is (from what I have been able to understand) an amazing speech.
it seems a pity that the Bof E is utterly complicit, with its QE , and so on. And if you think THAT is bad, look at QE in the US.
That can is getting a lot of kicking.....

                              À propos ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                                Thanks for that link FF.

Please correct me if am am wrong, but roughly translated..

Powerful bank interests say that giving government subsidies and contracts to big powerful engineering (etc) groups, (financed by powerful banks) is just what banks and big contractors need to get themselves moving.

Perhaps it lost something in translation..
